Patagonia Nano Air Pant- Gear Review

This October I bought the Women’s Nano Air Pants in preparation for the chilly Saskatchewan weather to set in. I was looking for a pant that would give me a decent amount of insulation, but also something that I wouldn't completely overheat in.

My initial observation when I first tried them on was just how comfortable they were! I instantly knew these pants were not only going to feel great during my activities, but they were also going to move with me incredibly well!

Some key features that the Nano Air Pants feature are:

 - Super stretchy and breathable material

- Excellent stretch panels for mobility during activities

- Premium lightweight insulation

Stretchy and Breathable Material

I must say that out of any insulated pants i've ever worn, these rank #1 in the comfort category. The wide waistband moves very well during activity, and causes me zero discomfort. The Nano Air material from Patagonia also really shines when it comes to breathability. It allows excess heat to move away from the body to avoid overheating, and minimizes the chances of excessive sweating. A fair warning on windy days I was definitely feeling the wind drive through the pants. The material is best suited for more high output activities such as cross country skiing, winter running, and heavy hiking in the cold. I would suggest throwing a pair of baselayer bottoms or a pair of shell pants on during those extra cold or windy days. My favourite baselayer with the Nano Air Pants are definitely the Patagonia Capilene Thermal Bottoms!

Excellent Stretch Panels

One of the main differences between the men’s and women’s Nano Air pants is the women's model has a fleece stretch panel running up the outside of the leg. This design was implemented after testers reported they needed more mobility, especially with other layers underneath, and as a way to reduce excess bulk. The stretch panels also do not sacrifice any of the air permeable qualities of the pants.

Premium Lightweight Material

The main thing I noticed with the Nano Air Pant was the absence of the bulky traditional insulation. The insulation itself is stretchy, and it kept me warm on moderately cold days. I will say that Patagonia designed these pants to perform first and foremost in the breathability category before warmth. I definitely found myself having to throw my base layer bottoms underneath on those -20 days. Nonetheless, they do an excellent job of providing active warmth!

Overall, these pants have exceeded my expectations on many counts! My one piece of advice for anyone who is considering picking a pair up for themselves is to consider layering on those chillier days, and to evaluate whether you are looking for a pant for aerobic circumstances or if you are looking for pure warmth.
